A New Day

Day Nine Early Morning

Lauren reached out to Spencer’s side of the bed, but her hand slid over cold sheets. They’d had to sleep, as much as they didn’t want to.

She’d woken three times during the night. The first time, her legs were intertwined with Spencer’s. His hard cock had pressed firmly to her backside; she’d barely restrained herself from grinding against him. There was no way she’d be able to stop herself from mating him once her strength returned. The second time she woke up, her head lay on his chest and his arms were around her. The last time, she woke to a puddle of drool on his firm chest. Embarrassed, she blotted it dry, trying not to wake him, and rolled away from him in mortification. He’d grasped her hips and tugged her back, spooning her. She’d fallen back into a deep sleep.

But he was gone now. The balcony curtains rustled. She dragged herself out of bed. Six was early by most people’s standards, but six is late when you run a diner. Most days, she watched the sunrise from the front window of the diner, out of bed since four. There were pastries to make and donuts to fry.

She padded out to the balcony. Only four hours of sleep didn’t slow her down.

“You’re up. I hope I didn’t wake you. You should sleep more.”

She sank into the patio chair next to him. “Seven is the latest I can sleep, ever.”

He took her hand. “Me too.”

The sun broke over the horizon. The sky was a dusky light blue already, with not a cloud in the sky. But somehow an ominous sensation sat in her gut. She wasn’t a seer. In fact, unlike most witches, her premonition talent wasn't much more than a coin flip. But this was different. Something was off. She glanced at the glorious male on her right. Was it him? She hoped not. Because every day, the thought of leaving him got harder. She might break apart if they couldn’t figure things out.

Her stomach growled. “Oh, Goddess.” She laughed.

“The dining room should be open soon. How about some food, and then we can go knock on a few doors and wake up some angry guests?” He held up the map of Dark Wing.

“Sounds like a plan.”
